Greythorn Galleries Melbourne October 2008
2008 is the 50th anniversary of John Borrack’s first solo exhibition. Successfully completing his first formal art qualifications in 1957, and having embarked in 1958 on further studies at RMIT majoring in drawing and oil painting, the young John Borrack pursued his passion for watercolour and gouache independently of those formal studies. His June 1958 exhibition at the Tasmanian Tourist Bureau in Melbourne consisted entirely of works on paper using watercolour as the medium. Along side his passion for painting plein air, his commitment to drawing, and his constant pursuit of painting in oils, while exhibiting almost exclusively in works on paper using watercolour and gouache as the medium, made for a somewhat unusual approach.
Since 1958 John has had over sixty solo exhibitions at major galleries exhibiting throughout Australia, and either annually or bi-annually in Melbourne. Best known for his lyrically structured landscape paintings, the subject matter has been drawn from across all of the continent with particular emphasis in recent years on his vast and colourful interpretations of the Northern Territory, Western Australian deserts and the Plenty Valley where he lives and has painted for fifty five years. Over the past decade John has exhibited his oil paintings more frequently, and his ability to move from one medium to the other while still retaining the haunting evocative quality which enables the viewer to feel enveloped by the primordial forces of the landscape, is particularly apparent in this, his 50th anniversary exhibition.
